Communication is about power and the ability to influence the message. When a communicator selects an image for a company’s Instagram page or interviews individuals for a newsletter, decisions are made that can reinforce, recreate, conceal, or change ideas about people, places, and events. Therefore, Amphi sees the communicator’s role as an asset in addressing issues of equality – if communication is approached with an awareness of power!
Inclusive and power-conscious communication is always evolving. It questions traditional patterns and creates new ones so that communication takes into account both current and historical power structures and contexts. It may seem challenging to address this, but being inspired by good examples can serve as motivation for communication work.
Power-conscious communication in practice
Amphi recently held a lecture on inclusive communication for around 60 communicators from various folk high schools across the country. The lecture included theory and practical tips to spark thoughts on possibilities moving forward. Some of the themes discussed included:
⫸ The difference between visible, quantitative representation and an inclusive visual language.
⫸ How to handle trends in social media, criticism, and ”cancel culture”.
⫸ The ways in which inclusive communication can be used as a tool for democracy and participation.
More complex issues such as the communicator’s responsibility and mandate also contributed to interesting discussions. After the lecture, participants had the opportunity to network and share experiences using a conversation method called ”Open Space.”
Welcome refresher of knowledge on power-conscious communication
The participants were highly engaged, and many expressed that they would integrate the knowledge as well as the new pedagogical methods in their own workplaces. Here are some of the reactions that we take away:
