Röhsska Museum
Guidance document on the permanent exhibition 2024
Power-conscious communication
CULTURE FOR THE PRESENT DAY
For a century, Röhsska Museum in Gothenburg has had a permanent exhibition shaped by the norms and values of its time. Now, they are replacing the exhibition with a new one that will reflect the 21st century and better amplify the voices of our era. When Röhsska contacted Amphi, we saw an exciting collaboration ahead, where norm-critical and intersectional perspectives would shape the development of their new permanent exhibition. The goal was for all future visitors to feel welcomed and represented within the museum’s walls.
We began with workshops, leading Röhsska through the process of dissecting the existing perspectives and structures to create an understanding of why certain narratives had dominated over others. Then, it was time for us to return to our drawing tables and start compiling and developing a guide in the form of a report to support Röhsska in applying the perspectives to the new exhibition.
A CONSCIOUS EXHIBITION
- Norm-criticism and anticolonialism
- Power-conscious perspectives on design and form
- Updated artistic expressions
- Operational guide for long-term change
A MUSEUM FOR EVERYONE
The final outcome was the report ”Guidance Document on the Permanent Exhibition 2024” – a comprehensive compilation of insights and guidelines intended to assist Röhsska in the work with the new exhibition that will fill their premises for many years to come. Finally, a workshop was held where the results were presented and the knowledge was passed on to Röhsska, a crucial milestone in incorporating the intersectional and norm-critical perspective into the museum’s future.
