TRAINING ON EVERY PERSON’S EQUAL VALUE
In a democratic society, our government agencies should make us feel confident that we are being treated equitably and without prejudice. Many of us are needed to work together to make such a society a reality, which is why we were pleased when the Living History Forum approached us with a request.
The Living History Forum is an agency tasked with promoting democracy, human rights, and the equal value of all people. They sought assistance in developing a web-based training to increase knowledge about racism and equitable treatment among government employees nationwide.
The budget did not allow for film production, so instead, we explored another format that we know has a similar effect in educational settings – audio dramas. An audio drama provides an opportunity to depict a story that helps the listener empathise with how a situation may be experienced by someone else. It can be listened to individually or in a group and can then serve as a starting point for reflections, new knowledge, and change efforts.
We began with an idea seminar with the client to discuss needs and goals. Based on the discussions, we developed the concept for the web-based training and an overall plan for content and structure.
We collected real-life stories and adapted them into fiction in close collaboration with scriptwriters and the client. A reference group consisting of representatives from the target audience provided valuable feedback, reflections, and insights. With their help, we then developed the entire web-based training.
THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF ANTI-RACISM
- Understanding the history of racism
- Equitable treatment in practice
- Intersectional perspectives as tools
- Self-reflection and unconscious bias
WEB FOR EQUITY
The web-based training ”Understanding Racism and Equal Treatment” is now available to all government employees who want to develop their work to combat racism and promote equitable treatment for all. We are proud of the result and delighted with the feedback we have received, indicating that the experiental parts foster engagement and discussions in agencies across the country.
You can access the web-based training yourself here.
