Power-conscious production

TO EMPHASIZE THE POSSIBILITIES

Can film help us better understand and develop the support systems for those who fall through the cracks of society due to prejudices and norms? With Amphi, you can create engaging stories that change how people see themselves and the world.

Linköping Stadsmission and Oasen have long worked to offer support and protection to individuals living with substance use problems and also experiencing violence. They have been alone in their efforts, as there is a lack of knowledge, functioning support structures, and resources. They reached out to us for help in developing educational material to strengthen the competence of those who encounter this target group in their work.

With Amphi’s experience in producing films about individuals experiencing violence, we took on the task with great humility. Together with Linköping City Mission, we planned an educational resource with dramatised films that would engage and create a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by the target group.

We began by conducting a survey with the target group to gain insight into their needs and experiences. We then interviewed staff at assisted living centres to gather their perspectives and knowledge.

By collaborating with a reference group, we developed scripts for the films to ensure that the material was relevant and useful. Our focus was on creating stories about unique individual situations while highlighting the societal patterns that prevent those in need of help and support from receiving it.

KNOWLEDGE AS THE KEY

  • Substance use problems and exposure to violence
  • Intersectional perspectives on the target group’s circumstances
  • Society’s responsibility to treat everyone equitably
  • A holistic perspective on support, protection and treatment

STORIES ABOUT LIFE CIRCUMSTANCES AND CHANGE

The result was four short films, where each film serves as a basis for conversations about life circumstances and people’s struggle to break destructive patterns and move away from individuals who perpetrate violence and oppression. The films also show the opportunities that people and the society can offer and emphasise the importance of a respectful and knowledge-based approach. In collaboration with Linköping City Mission, we also created an informational film presenting their work, along with a guide for leaders and educators to facilitate the use of the material and promote deeper learning.
